Having that personal connection no doubt makes the injustice of this issue resonate even more. Please do share your own story, and mine!

Fantastic job. This dreadful exploitation of nature also affects the more recent occupants of this area. My dad’s family (from Scotland and Ireland) settled in the 17th and 18th centuries in Halifax, then to Upper Sackville NB, Amherst NS and Springhill NS. My grandparents emigrated to Massachusetts in the 1920s with my dad and uncle, then small boys. Their small farms long ago went back to forest and wetland. So I have been across this area. It is wide open, spectacular and precious, water is plentiful and clean, the coasts are beautiful and vulnerable – and it all must be protected.

There’s a sidebar at the end of the article that talks briefly about victory at Seneca Lake to prevent gas storage expansion there. We are all joined under one big sky as water protectors.

This makes me sick down to the core. We fought off a major gas and oil corporation and won, following an 8 year battle. If there is anything we can do to help the Mi’kmaq people in their fight, please let us know!

Thank you so much for the positive feedback, Dorene. I’m glad that after hearing your story a few years ago, I was able to develop this article. FracTracker is proud to do whatever we can to elevate and publicize the fights for water protection and sovereign rights of the Mi’kmaq and other Indigenous People who are facing human and environmental health threats from oil and gas development. Please do keep us posted on updates on the consultations and court hearings and any other developments. In solidarity with you from Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’ (Cayuga) territory.
