Many of these natural surface expressions, were explored and excavated for their prolific fossil collections prior to oil and gas development in CA. Some of the small local museums as well as the bigger museums have collections donated from the turn of 19th century. These exhibits usually have fairly good documentation for the location of the find (Victorian era collectors were pretty good at documenting their finds).
The tar pits pre-date oil and gas development and will point to natural pathways that oil and gas drillers should be encouraged to avoid.
